Work

Rev. Władysław Czesław Siarkowski was a Catholic priest, ethnographer and regional historian whose work played an important role in documenting the folk culture of the Kielce Region. A particular focus of his interests was the traditions, customs and beliefs of rural communities, encompassing both spiritual and material culture.

In his works, Siarkowski described, among other things, the annual cycle of rituals and customs, folk religious practices, and beliefs in supernatural beings and their influence on the everyday lives of the region’s inhabitants. He was also interested in crafts and rural industries, as well as various aspects of the life of local communities.

An important part of his work was the research he conducted throughout the Kielce Region, particularly in the Ponidzie area. The materials he collected helped preserve knowledge of the traditions and worldviews of the region’s inhabitants in the 19th century.

Early Years

Władysław Czesław Siarkowski was born on 28 February 1840 in Imielno. He was the son of Józef and Antonina, née Zarzecka. He began his education in Kraków, where he attended the District School at St Barbara’s College and St Anne’s Gymnasium.

In 1860, he entered the Seminary in Kielce. He completed his studies in 1864 and was ordained to the priesthood by Rev. Maciej Majerczak.

On 15 July 1864, he was assigned to the parish in Proszowice, where he began serving as a curate. From 1866 to 1872, he served as a curate at the Collegiate Church of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Kielce.

In the following years, he held positions related to church administration. In 1873, he became secretary of the Kielce Consistory, and a year later he was appointed notary of the Episcopal Court in Kielce.

At the same time, his scholarly interests continued to develop. In 1876, he became an associate member, that is, a collaborator of the Anthropological Commission of the Academy of Learning in Kraków. Oskar Kolberg played an important role in securing this appointment, and it was through his efforts that Siarkowski began collaborating with the Kraków scholarly community.

Later Years

A particularly important milestone in the research work of Rev. Władysław Siarkowski came in January 1877, when he became parish priest in Kije, in Pińczów County. The Ponidzie area became one of the most important areas of his ethnographic research.

Siarkowski documented various aspects of rural life. He studied both spiritual culture – beliefs, rituals and customs – and material culture. He collected information on, among other things, crafts and rural industries, preserving knowledge that might otherwise have been lost.

His scholarly work was also recognised beyond the region. In 1878, he became a member of the Lviv Archaeological Society. In the same year, on 21 December, he was granted the title of honorary canon of the Diocese of Sandomierz.

Today, Siarkowski’s work is a valuable source of knowledge about the 19th-century Kielce Region. His descriptions document not only specific customs and rituals, but also the way in which the region’s inhabitants understood the world around them and its supernatural dimension.

Legacy

The significance of Rev. Władysław Siarkowski’s work extends far beyond his own time. By documenting the traditions of the inhabitants of the Kielce Region, he preserved knowledge of a culture that underwent significant changes in subsequent generations. His works became an important reference point for later research into the region’s folk culture.

Of particular importance are his records concerning spiritual culture – beliefs, folk religious practices, rituals and customs, and beliefs associated with supernatural beings. They make it possible to compare the preservation of former traditions with what has survived in the collective memory of the inhabitants of the Kielce Region to the present day.

On 16 September 1900, due to a serious lung disease, Rev. Władysław Siarkowski relinquished his ecclesiastical duties. He moved to stay with a relative in Grodziec, where his condition required constant care.

He died on 23 March 1902 in Grodziec. He was buried in the local cemetery. His memory has also been preserved in Kije, where a commemorative epitaph dedicated to him can be found in the Church of Saints Peter and Paul.

The legacy of Rev. Siarkowski remains an important testimony to the traditional culture of the Kielce Region and a valuable source of knowledge about the lives of its inhabitants in the 19th century.

Ethnography of the Kielce Region

The Spiritual Culture of the Kielce Region is a project dedicated to documenting and promoting the region’s traditional spiritual culture, with a particular focus on the area around Pińczów. The project combines contemporary field research with materials collected in the 19th century by Rev. Władysław Siarkowski – an ethnographer, regional historian and collaborator of Oskar Kolberg.

The collected accounts, photographs and other materials document the beliefs, rituals, customs and collective memory of the inhabitants of the Kielce Region. Particular attention is given to accounts concerning supernatural beings and their place in the traditional worldview.
